The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has classified a recall of more than 900 cases of alfredo sauce at its highest risk level due to potential salmonella contamination.

According to the FDA, the recall involves alfredo sauce produced by Coffee Connexion Co., Inc., of Lebanon, Tennessee. The company voluntarily initiated the recall on May 6 after learning that a dry milk powder ingredient used in the product had been recalled by a supplier because of possible salmonella contamination.

The FDA has designated the action as a Class I recall, its most serious classification. A Class I recall is issued when there is a reasonable probability that use of the product could cause serious adverse health consequences or death.

The recalled product was distributed in 41 states, including Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Alabama, California, Georgia and numerous others.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms may include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

The recall remains ongoing, and consumers who may have purchased the affected product are encouraged to check recall notices and avoid consuming the sauce.
