Multiple injuries and widespread property damage were reported after a tornado tore through northern Effingham County Wednesday night.

According to the Effingham County Emergency Management Agency, the tornado traveled an estimated 12 to 15 miles across the northern portion of the county, causing significant damage to homes, businesses, and farms.

Effingham Fire Chief, Brant Yochum said emergency crews responded to numerous storm-related incidents, primarily in the Shumway and Siegal areas. Reports included heavily damaged homes, collapsed structures, vehicle crashes, downed power lines, gas leaks, and blocked roadways.

Several people suffered minor injuries within the fire department’s response area, but officials reported no life-threatening injuries.

Early this (Thursday) morning, a disaster declaration was issued for Effingham County. The declaration is intended to expedite resources and assistance to communities affected by the storm and support ongoing recovery efforts.

Meanwhile Effingham County Sheriff, Paul Kuhns is urging residents to avoid traveling through damaged areas. Officials say some roads remain impassable, and unnecessary traffic can hinder emergency crews and utility workers responding to the disaster.

Damage assessments and recovery efforts are continuing across the county.
