The St. Louis Cardinals surrendered six runs in the bottom of the second during a 14-6 loss to the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium. Jose Fermin drove in two runs during the losing effort, while Matthew Liberatore was charged with his fourth loss after allowing five earned runs and two unearned runs on seven hits in one-and-two-thirds innings. St. Louis remains in second place in the NL Central at 40-and-33. Michael McGreevy starts for the Cardinals against Kansas City tonight. The Cardinals are switching out relief pitchers. The team called up right-hander Max Rajcic from Triple-A Memphis yesterday. Chris Roycroft was designated for assignment in a corresponding move. Rajcic made his MLB debut in last night’s loss to the Royals, allowing one run on two hits in two innings.

(Undated) — The Senate Commerce Committee voted Thursday to move the Protect College Sports Act to a full Senate vote. The federal bill would provide the NCAA with an antitrust exemption so that it could enforce a cap on payments to athletes as well as rules related to eligibility and transfers in college sports. It would also create an opportunity for schools to sell their media rights as one large entity rather than by conference. The details are still subject to change.

(Undated) — The Angels will be without their three-time American League MVP for the foreseeable future. Los Angeles has placed center fielder Mike Trout on the 10-day injured list due to a right hamstring strain. Trout told reporters that he suffered the injury while running to first base during the team’s loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday. The 34-year-old has not played in more than 130 games in a season since 2019. The 11-time All-Star is batting .234 with 17 home runs and 36 RBIs through 74 games played this season.
