ILLINOIS EXPANDS PHARMACISTS’ ROLE IN PROVIDING BIRTH CONTROL

Illinois residents will soon have expanded access to birth control after the Illinois Department of Public Health updated a statewide standing order allowing specially trained pharmacists to provide additional contraceptive options directly to patients. Under the updated policy, pharmacists who complete state-approved training can now provide certain prescription contraceptives, including non-hormonal birth control and emergency contraception, without requiring a prior doctor’s visit. State health officials say the change is designed to improve access for individuals who may face challenges scheduling medical appointments or who live in areas with limited health care services.

Before providing contraception, pharmacists must review a patient’s medical history, conduct a health screening, determine whether the medication is appropriate, and offer counseling on available options. Patients may also be referred to a physician or other health care provider when necessary. The standing order also allows participating pharmacists to issue prescriptions for some over-the-counter reproductive health products, including condoms and pregnancy tests, when needed for insurance coverage purposes.

State officials emphasized that the program is intended to complement, not replace, traditional medical care by offering residents another convenient option for accessing contraceptive services.

The updated standing order is now in effect for pharmacists who meet the state’s training and certification requirements.
