A record 72.2 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home during the Independence Day holiday period, according to a forecast from AAA. The nine-day travel period, running from June 27th through July 5th, is expected to surpass last year’s record of 71.8 million travelers.

Road travel remains the most popular option, with 61.4 million people expected to travel by car, accounting for about 85 percent of all holiday travelers. Despite higher fuel prices, AAA says driving continues to be the most affordable choice for many families.

Air travel is expected to remain steady, with nearly 5.84 million Americans projected to fly during the holiday period. Meanwhile, travel by bus, train, and cruise ship is expected to see the largest increase, with nearly 4.93 million travelers choosing those options. AAA is also urging travelers to put safety first. The organization notes that nearly one-third of summertime traffic fatalities involve an impaired driver and encourages motorists to arrange sober transportation if they plan to drink.

Before hitting the road, AAA recommends checking tire pressure, battery condition, and other routine maintenance items. During last year’s Independence Day travel period, AAA responded to more than 687,000 roadside assistance calls, many involving dead batteries, flat tires, and towing needs.

Motorists are also reminded to obey Illinois’ Move Over Law by slowing down and changing lanes when approaching emergency vehicles or disabled motorists along the roadside.
