Travelers who use the Cave-In-Rock Ferry will need to find alternate routes beginning today (Wednesday), as the ferry will suspend operations indefinitely.

Officials announced the ferry’s current operating contract expired at 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, June 30th. With no new agreement in place, service between Cave-In-Rock, Illinois, and Marion, Kentucky, will cease effective today (Wednesday).

Negotiations on a new operating contract remain ongoing, and officials say ferry service will not resume until a new agreement is reached.

The closure affects a key Ohio River crossing frequently used by commuters, commercial traffic and tourists traveling between Southern Illinois and Western Kentucky.

Officials say updates on the ferry’s status will be released as more information becomes available.
