FORMER CARTERVILLE TEACHER’S CRIMINAL CASE DELAYED

By Mark Wells Jul 1, 2026 | 11:56 AM

A Williamson County judge has delayed the criminal case against former Carterville teacher and football coach John Wakey as attorneys continue exchanging evidence.

Wakey has pleaded not guilty to nine felony counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse involving allegations made by former students.

The case remains in the discovery phase, with prosecutors and defense attorneys indicating additional investigative materials still need to be exchanged before the case can proceed.

Defense attorney Michael Malin told the court he is waiting on the remaining police reports before filing a formal response to the prosecution’s discovery. No new court date was announced.
