The Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police and local law enforcement agencies are reminding motorists to drive sober during the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
As part of the statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, officers will have zero tolerance for impaired driving and will increase enforcement through the early morning hours of Monday.
According to provisional IDOT data, 18 people were killed in 17 fatal crashes during last year’s Independence Day holiday period. Four of those crashes involved drivers who had been drinking.
In addition to targeting impaired drivers, law enforcement officers will be enforcing seat belt, speeding and distracted driving laws throughout the holiday weekend.
Officials encourage anyone who plans to consume alcohol, cannabis or other impairing substances to designate a sober driver, use a ride service or make other transportation arrangements before celebrating.
The campaign is funded through federal highway safety funds administered by IDOT and is part of the agency’s “It’s Not a Game” traffic safety initiative.
