The Illinois Department of Transportation is urging motorists to watch for pavement buckling as extreme heat and humidity continue across the state.
IDOT says prolonged high temperatures can cause pavement to buckle or blow out with little warning, creating hazardous driving conditions. Maintenance crews are monitoring roadways and are prepared to respond quickly to make emergency repairs.
Drivers who encounter pavement failures are encouraged to report them by calling 800-452-4368 or by contacting local law enforcement through 911.
Motorists should also expect possible delays near repair sites and are reminded to slow down and move over for highway workers and emergency personnel.
With dangerous heat expected to continue, IDOT also recommends keeping extra water in your vehicle in case of an emergency or unexpected delay.
