The City of Carmi has announced traffic patterns for its annual Independence Day fireworks display, scheduled for tomorrow. Fireworks are expected to begin between 9 and 9:15 p.m., with traffic restrictions taking effect at 8:50 p.m.
As in previous years, southbound traffic on Oak Street will be closed at Fairground Road, and northbound traffic from Main Street to Fairground Road will also be closed.
Officials say all entrances to the White County Fairgrounds will be blocked during the fireworks display. No vehicles or pedestrians will be allowed inside the fairgrounds, and anyone remaining inside before the show begins will be asked to leave by Carmi Police or Fire Department personnel. Parking will still be permitted around the outside fence of the fairgrounds.
Following the display, traffic leaving the area will be directed according to an established traffic flow designed to move vehicles safely and efficiently. Motorists are urged to follow directions from police officers, auxiliary officers, and fire personnel.
Police are also reminding residents that most consumer fireworks are illegal in Illinois. Officials say fireworks that explode or produce loud noises are generally prohibited. Anyone found possessing or using illegal fireworks could have them confiscated and may receive a citation. Depending on the quantity involved, violations could result in a Class A misdemeanor charge.
Residents are encouraged to enjoy the community fireworks display and leave the pyrotechnics to the professionals.
