A 14-year-old Florida girl has died following an on-track incident early Monday during the AMA Flat Track Grand Championship at the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds.
The American Motorcyclist Association identified the rider as Alyssa Kruppenbacker of Crescent City, Florida, who was competing in the Mile program at the national amateur championship.
Emergency responders were called to the track shortly after midnight for a rider with traumatic injuries, and an air medical helicopter was requested. The AMA later confirmed Kruppenbacker died following the incident.
In a statement, the organization said it was “saddened and heartbroken” by the loss and extended its condolences to Kruppenbacker’s family and the flat track racing community.
The AMA Flat Track Grand Championship is one of the nation’s premier amateur motorcycle racing events and draws hundreds of competitors from across the country to Du Quoin each year.
Officials have not released additional information about the circumstances surrounding the crash.
