Margaret “Jean” Shupe, age 94, of Carrollton, Illinois, passed away Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at her residence with her sons by her side. She was born on September 6, 1931, in West Salem, Illinois, the daughter of Lyman and Emma Christy Weber. She married Harold Shupe August 29, 1950, in Kentucky, and he preceded her in death September 26, 2009.
She is survived by two sons, David (Angela) Shupe of La Grange, KY, and Todd Shupe of Baton Rouge, LA. Six grandchildren: Emily, John (Rhiane), Grace and Grant Shupe, Emma and Kyle Shupe, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a daughter, Lisa Ann Shupe, brother, Merle Weber, and a sister, Ada Mae Roosevelt.
Jean graduated from West Salem High School in 1948. She attended Eastern Illinois University and earned her bachelor’s degree in education. She began her teaching career in Harrisburg in 1956. They moved to Elizabeth in 1963, to Marshall in 1966, and then their final move to Carrollton in 1969. While raising a family, she worked as a substitute teacher at Carrollton, St. John’s and Eldred. In addition, she attended SIU Edwardsville and earned her master’s degree. She finished her career as the Spanish Teacher at Carrollton High School. She was a faithful member of Carrollton United Methodist Church. She enjoyed playing bridge, Cardinal baseball, and she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Her greatest joy was raising a family and supporting her husband. Jean always had a smile for everyone.
Visitation is planned for July 23, 2026, from 5 pm to 7 pm at the United Methodist Church in Carrollton. Graveside services will be July 24, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Graceland Cemetery in Albion, Illinois.
