The Cubs outslugged the Dodgers 10-5 in their series opener at home. Carson Kelly and Michael Busch led the offense with home runs and three RBIs each. Chicago has won three of its last five games and will continue the three-game series tonight against Tarik Skubal. Meanwhile, the Cubs were active ahead of yesterday’s trade deadline. The team acquired starter Clay Holmes and outfielder Tyrone Taylor from the Mets in exchange for Jefferson Rojas. Chicago also traded for pitchers Ryan Zeferjahn and Braxton Garrett from the Angels and Marlins.

The Cardinals scored seven times in the eighth inning to stun the Yankees 13-7 in their series opener from the Bronx. Nathan Church blasted a three-run homer as part of the onslaught. St. Louis has won two straight and will continue the three-game set tonight. The Cards were sellers at the deadline. The team sent Lars Nootbaar to the Diamondbacks for a pair of pitching prospects. Dustin May and JoJo Romero were offloaded to the Brewers in exchange for two outfielders.

(Undated) — The MLB trade deadline did not disappoint. ESPN reports the Phillies swung big with the acquisition of three-time batting champion Luis Arraez [[ ah-RISE ]] from the Giants. The Phils also added reliever Brooks Raley from the rival Mets in another deal. Elsewhere, the Red Sox traded for All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman from the Orioles and sent struggling youngster Marcelo Mayer [[ MY-er ]] to San Fran for reliever Erik Miller. The Dodgers continued their aggressiveness after acquiring starter Kris Bubic [[ BOO-bich ]] from the Royals. Other notable deals include, the Guardians adding All-Star pitcher Foster Griffin from the Nationals and the Padres securing starters Robbie Ray and Casey Mize from the Giants and Tigers.

(San Francisco, CA) — The San Francisco Giants are suspending pay to injured outfielder Harrison Bader. Bader will not be paid until he is able to return from an injury he suffered in a scooter crash in San Francisco last month. Bader has been sidelined for much of the season with plantar fasciitis, and reinjured the same foot in the crash. Bader reportedly crashed into the back of a fire truck. Bader was hospitalized after the fire truck’s wheel reportedly rolled over his foot. Witnesses say they saw him drinking before the crash. The Athletic reports Bader “has not fully cooperated” with the Giants’ investigation.

(Chicago, IL) — The Chicago Bears will start the season without one of their top offseason additions. Safety Coby Bryant is expected to miss eight to ten weeks with a hyperextended left knee, bone bruise and small fracture. Bryant was carted off the practice field after going down during training camp. He joined Chicago this spring on a three-year, 40-million-dollar contract after helping the Seattle Seahawks win the Super Bowl.

(Foxboro, MA) — AJ Brown continues to show his willingness to compete. The Patriots’ star wide receiver told NFL Network that he dislocated his thumb during Monday’s practice, but did not miss any time. The dislocation occurred during one-on-one periods when Brown was matched up against cornerback Christian Gonzalez. Brown said he planned to receive “stim and ice” treatment after practice.

(Santa Clara, CA) — Another day, and another San Francisco 49ers wide receiver is watching training camp from the sidelines. This time, it’s veteran Mike Evans because of a quad strain. There’s no timeline for his return to practice. Evans joins veteran Christian Kirk and rookie De’Zhaun Stribling on the shelf, with hopes of returning to work soon. Niners star Ricky Pearsall Jr. is done for the year with a knee injury.

(St. Joseph, MO) — Kansas City Chiefs wideout Xavier Worthy is expected to return to practice this week after nursing an injury. Head coach Andy Reid said that Worthy suffered a mild shoulder sprain over the weekend. Meantime, rookie wideout Cyrus Allen is also expected to return in the near future after going down with a bruised shin on Sunday.

(Rochester, NY) — Buffalo Bills safety CJ Gardner-Johnson avoided a major injury at training camp. Head coach Joe Brady said that the team is “really fortunate” that the 28-year-old suffered only a calf strain over the weekend. The team had feared the worst when Gardner-Johnson went down and had to be carted off the practice field.

(Allen Park, MI) — Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs’ training camp hold-in continued Monday with no apparent end in sight. The three-time Pro Bowler was seen on the sidelines as he missed a fifth-straight practice while awaiting a contract extension. Gibbs told reporters after practice that “time will tell” when he returns to action.

(Los Angeles, CA) — Notre Dame and USC will resume their historic football rivalry in 2030. The schools have agreed to a four-year deal, starting in week one of the 2030 season. That game will be in Los Angeles on August 31st, 2030. Notre Dame will host USC on August 30th, 2031. The announcement came after Indiana backed out of its home-and-home series with Notre Dame, scheduled for 2030 and 2031. USC decided not to play its annual game with the Fighting Irish after last season, citing its cross-country travel schedule since joining the Big Ten. The Notre Dame-USC rivalry dates back to 1926.
