The Illinois Department of Revenue is reminding shoppers that the state’s Sales Tax Holiday for back-to-school purchases begins Friday and continues through Sunday, August 16th.

During the 10-day tax holiday, the state’s portion of the sales tax will be reduced by 5 percentage points, lowering the rate from 6.25% to 1.25% on qualifying purchases.

Eligible items include a variety of school supplies, such as pencils, markers, notebooks, folders and other classroom essentials. Many clothing items, including shoes priced at less than $125 per item, also qualify for the reduced tax rate.

Unlike clothing purchases, there is no price limit on eligible school supplies.

The last statewide sales tax holiday was held in 2022.

The tax holiday is designed to help Illinois families save money as they prepare students for the upcoming school year.
