The Flagman’s Mission Continues is asking for volunteers from Norris City and surrounding communities to help create a memorial of American flags in honor of U.S. Army Cpl. Jackie Lee Thurman, whose remains are being returned home after more than 75 years.
Volunteers are needed to line the funeral route with as many as 600 American flags mounted on 10-foot poles to pay tribute to the Korean War soldier.
The flag setup will take place tomorrow (Thursday) beginning at 4 p.m., with volunteers meeting at American Legion Post 109, located at 200 E. Second Street in Norris City.
Following funeral services, volunteers are also needed to remove the flags on Sunday, August 9th beginning at 1 p.m., again meeting at American Legion Post 109.
Organizers say anyone who can carry approximately five pounds and walk can help, and with enough volunteers the work should take about three hours. Those arriving late are still encouraged to participate.
The group is also seeking four clean pickup trucks—without trailers—to help transport the flags. Volunteers are encouraged to wear gloves and comfortable walking shoes and bring their own beverages to stay hydrated.
Youth groups and children, preferably age 11 and older, are welcome to assist.
No advance registration or commitment is required. Organizers simply ask volunteers to show up on either or both days. They note that as many people are needed to take down the flags as are needed to set them up.
