Illinois corn development continues to progress ahead of the five-year average in some categories, while soybean development remains near or slightly ahead of its normal pace.
According to the USDA’s latest crop progress report, 14% of Illinois corn had dented as of the week ending Aug. 9, compared with the five-year average of 10%. Corn silking reached 96%, while 64% was in the dough stage.
Corn condition was rated 61% good to excellent, with 28% fair and 11% poor to very poor.
Soybeans blooming reached 92%, while 77% were setting pods, compared with the five-year average of 74%. Soybean condition was rated 59% good to excellent.
Illinois farmers had 5.7 days suitable for fieldwork during the week. Statewide precipitation averaged 0.42 inches, which was 0.37 inches below normal.
Topsoil moisture was rated 70% adequate and 6% surplus, while 24% was short or very short. Subsoil moisture was 65% adequate and 7% surplus, with 28% rated short or very short.
