Illinois State Police Troop 9 will conduct special Occupant Restraint Enforcement Patrols in several area counties during August and September.
Troop 9 Commander Lieutenant Bruce Waggoner said the patrols will be conducted in Effingham, Wayne, Fayette, Marion, White and Wabash counties.
Troopers will focus on violations involving seat belts and child safety seats. Illinois law requires passengers in both the front and back seats of vehicles to be properly restrained.
ISP says safety belts are estimated to save more than 14,000 lives each year, while nearly half of vehicle occupants killed in traffic crashes were not wearing seat belts.
The enforcement effort is designed to increase seat belt and child restraint use through education, child safety seat inspections and enforcement.
