The Food and Drug Administration has upgraded a major egg recall to its highest risk classification because of possible Salmonella contamination.
The recall involves eggs produced by Midwest Poultry Services and sold under several brands, including Kroger, Brookshire’s, Country Morning, Simple Truth and Sunups, along with various bulk Grade A and Grade AA eggs.
The FDA says 98 people in 17 states have been sickened, including cases in Illinois. Twenty-six people have been hospitalized, while no deaths have been reported.
The recalled eggs carry identifying codes P-1950 or 0840962, with Julian dates between 157 and 184 and sell-by or best-by dates ranging from July 20 through Aug. 17.
Consumers who still have recalled eggs should throw them away or return them to the place of purchase and clean and sanitize surfaces or containers that may have come into contact with them.
