Egyptian Health Department officials have identified mosquitoes in White County that have tested positive for West Nile virus.

The health department began West Nile virus surveillance in May, which includes trapping and testing adult mosquitoes throughout White, Saline and Gallatin counties.

Officials say no West Nile virus-positive mosquitoes have been identified in Saline or Gallatin counties at this time.

People infected with West Nile virus may become ill three to 14 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. Symptoms are typically mild and can include fever, headache and body aches.

However, serious illness and death are possible. Health officials say people over age 50 are at the greatest risk of developing serious illness from the virus.
