The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is expanding an investigation into General Motors vehicles over concerns about potential engine failures.
The federal agency said Friday that the new probe expands one of two existing recall investigations involving GM’s L87 6.2-liter V-8 engine. NHTSA initially began investigating the engines in 2025.
The issue involves manufacturing defects affecting connecting rod and crankshaft engine components. General Motors has attributed the problem to supplier manufacturing and quality issues.
Vehicles affected by the investigation include the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Tahoe and Suburban; GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon and Yukon XL; and Cadillac Escalade.
The expanded investigation will include newer model years as federal regulators continue reviewing the potential engine failure risk.
