A man was rescued Thursday after becoming trapped in a grain bin in Xenia.

The Clay County 911 Dispatch Center received the call at approximately 10:19 a.m. Thursday, August 27, prompting multiple emergency agencies to respond.

Upon arrival, emergency personnel joined workers inside the grain bin and worked to secure the individual to prevent him from sinking farther into the grain.

Rescuers were able to secure the man using a grain bin rescue tube system. Workers and emergency personnel then opened the bin to allow grain to flow out and relieve pressure around him.

At approximately 12:21 p.m., the man was able to crawl out through the bin door under his own power. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Others who spent an extended period inside the grain bin were also treated as a precaution.

Agencies assisting with the rescue included the Xenia Fire Department, Xenia Police Department, Clay County ESDA, Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Illinois State Police and fire departments from Salem, Iuka, Orchardville and Odin.
