Illinois election officials are reviewing how a recent U.S. Supreme Court order could affect mail-in ballots ahead of the November 3 election.
The order allows the Trump administration, for now, to move forward with an executive order that could impose new restrictions on the handling of mail ballots. Illinois is among 23 states challenging the order in court.
State election officials say they are reviewing the ruling to determine what impact, if any, it could have on Illinois voters and local election procedures.
For now, officials in some counties plan to continue with their existing election schedules, including mailing requested ballots beginning Sept. 24.
Governor J.B. Pritzker criticized the Supreme Court’s decision, calling it “deeply troubling.”
The broader legal challenge remains pending, meaning election procedures could change depending on additional court rulings.
Voters who plan to cast ballots by mail are encouraged to watch for updates from their local election authorities regarding any changes to requesting, receiving or returning ballots.
