The National Weather Service in Paducah says dangerous heat will continue across southern Illinois through the start of the Labor Day weekend.
An Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. Saturdayand the National Weather Service warns that the combination of extreme heat and high humidity significantly increases the risk of heat-related illnesses. Officials say extreme high forecast temperatures will be a good 10 to 15 degrees above their seasonal normals will combine with the effects of humidity to increasingly make the rest of the week a dangerous period of prolonged heat. Heat index values hit triple digits every day and may top out up to 109 degrees. Actual air temperatures reach to near or even above 100 degrees multiple days in a row. Numerous nights might have warm record overnight low temperatures in the mid 70s as well, so there is really no significant break offered from the heat as we head into the holiday weekend and all the numerous activities and outdoor events that may be planned.
Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned locations when possible and check on relatives, neighbors and pets. Those spending time outdoors should wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and limit strenuous activities to the early morning or evening hours.
