>>Los Angeles Clippers, Kawhi Leonard Penalized For Salary Cap Violations
(Los Angeles, CA) — The NBA is imposing sweeping penalties against the Los Angeles Clippers and Kawhi Leonard for violating the league’s salary cap circumvention rules. The league announced the punishments Wednesday after an independent investigation. The probe found the Clippers helped Leonard obtain off-court income from companies doing business with the team, while Leonard violated league rules through conduct by his former business manager. The Clippers were fined 30-million-dollars and ordered to forfeit five first-round draft picks from 2029 through 2033. Team owner Steve Ballmer and business operations president Gillian Zucker were suspended for one year, while basketball operations president Lawrence Frank received a six-month suspension. Leonard was ordered to pay the league 700-thousand-dollars. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver called the violations flagrant and cited institutional and leadership failures within the Clippers organization.
>>Cousins Named Raiders’ Starting QB
(Las Vegas, NV) — In what may be the NFL’s worst-kept secret, Kirk Cousins will be the Las Vegas Raiders’ Week One starting quarterback. Head coach Klint Kubiak announced the decision after saying for months that first overall draft pick Fernando Mendoza would be the understudy. Cousins didn’t practice Wednesday, getting “veteran rest” so Mendoza could get reps with the first-team offense. Meantime, Kubiak says he’s confident that running back Ashton Jeanty will be available for the season opener as he nurses an ankle injury.
>>Vikings GM: McCarthy Will Be On Week One Roster
(Eagan, MN) — Minnesota Vikings quarterback JJ McCarthy isn’t going anywhere. General manager Nolan Teasley said yesterday that the 23-year-old will be on the Week One roster despite speculation about his future. McCarthy lost the starting quarterback competition to Kyler Murray early in training camp and enters the regular season sharing backup duties with veteran Carson Wentz.
>>Falcons’ Quarterback Competition Continues
(Flowery Branch, GA) — The Atlanta Falcons’ starting quarterback competition appears to be heading down to the wire. General manager Ian Cunningham said yesterday that a decision between Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr. hasn’t been made, and won’t be announced until the coaches are ready. Tagovailoa has had a roller coaster preseason while Penix has been limited during training camp as he recovers from a torn ACL. Atlanta also has Cooper Rush and Jack Strand on the depth chart.
>>Eagles’ QB Hurts Says He And AJ Brown Grew Apart
(Philadelphia, PA) — The Eagles’ starting quarterback is shedding some light on a recent breakup. Jalen Hurts confirmed in a recent interview that he and wide receiver AJ Brown weren’t as close as they once were last season. Hurts acknowledged to GQ magazine that he wasn’t surprised his relationship with Brown was talked about, but didn’t mention any specific incident that caused the distance.
>>Colts WR Keenan Allen To Keep Number 10
(Indianapolis, IN) — A veteran wide receiver will have a new number when he suits up for the Colts this season. Keenan Allen will wear the number 10 jersey that he was given after signing with Indianapolis last week. Allen had spent the entirety of his 13-year NFL career wearing the number 13, but will keep number 10 after relenting to teammate Laquon Treadwell. Allen was recently arrested on drunken driving charges, but will play in the season opener according to general manager Chris Ballard.
>>Buccaneers’ Egbuka, McMillan On Mend
(Tampa, FL) — Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receivers Emeka Egbuka and Jalen McMillan are beginning to ramp up from injuries that sidelined them at the end of training camp. Both players worked on a side field during practice today and coach Todd Bowles says they’re moving in the right direction. Egbuka is nursing a toe injury while McMillan has a knee issue. Their availability for Week One is, for now, uncertain.
