The Clay County Health Department has confirmed the county’s third West Nile virus-positive mosquito sample of the 2026 season.
The latest positive sample was collected Thursday in Xenia during routine testing. Health officials say the result confirms the virus is circulating in the community and residents should take precautions against mosquito bites.
Residents are encouraged to follow the “Three R’s” — reduce exposure to mosquitoes, repel mosquitoes with insect repellent and report potential mosquito breeding areas.
Most people infected with West Nile virus have no symptoms, although some may experience fever, headache, nausea and muscle aches. In rare cases, the virus can cause serious illness, including meningitis or encephalitis. People over age 50 are at greater risk for severe illness.
Clay County continues to monitor mosquito populations through testing and surveillance.
