The Clay County Health Department will offer free child car seat safety checks Friday, September 25th, from noon until 4 p.m. Certified child passenger safety technicians will be available to check whether car seats are properly installed, appropriate for the child's age and size, and whether the seat has expired. Technicians will also answer questions from parents and caregivers. The event coincides with Child Passenger Safety Week, September 20th through the 26th. Health officials say statistics show three out of four child safety seats are installed incorrectly. Illinois law requires children to be properly secured in an appropriate child restraint system until age 8, with children under age 2 generally required to ride rear-facing. The September 25th safety checks will be provided free of charge at the Clay County Health Department.
