Illinois State Police Troop 9 will conduct Alcohol Countermeasure Enforcement patrols in six area counties during October.
Troop 9 Commander Bruce Waggoner announced the ACE patrols will be conducted in Clay, Marion, Effingham, Wayne, Lawrence and White counties.
The enforcement details are designed to prevent and detect impaired driving and other violations involving the illegal transportation or consumption of alcohol or drugs.
Troopers will watch for drivers showing signs of impairment or operating vehicles in an unsafe manner. Officers will also focus on suspended or revoked drivers, open alcohol violations, improper seat belt and child restraint use, distracted driving and other Illinois Vehicle Code violations.
ISP says alcohol and drug impairment are estimated to be a factor in more than 47 percent of all fatal motor vehicle crashes in Illinois. The agency says the ACE program provides additional resources to help remove impaired drivers from the road.
The October patrols are funded through the Illinois Department of Transportation.
