A small earthquake was recorded Monday morning in southern Illinois near Rend Lake.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported the 2.4 magnitude earthquake with an epicenter just south of Rend Lake and south of Mt. Vernon. The quake was initially recorded as a magnitude 2.1 near Crainville. It has since been upgraded to a 2.4, with the location moved to the Valier area.
No damage has been reported, and as of the latest information, no one had submitted a report to the USGS indicating they felt the earthquake.
Southern Illinois lies between two notable areas of seismic activity — the New Madrid Seismic Zone to the southwest and the Wabash Valley Seismic Zone to the northeast.
The USGS had not attributed Monday’s earthquake to either seismic zone.
While earthquakes of this magnitude are generally too small to cause damage, Monday’s event marks another minor earthquake recorded recently in the Illinois and Missouri region.
