The North Wayne Community Unit School District #200 Board of Education voted down a motion Wednesday night that would have committed the board to placing a proposal on the April 2027 ballot if it moves forward with plans to close both elementary schools and construct a new elementary school.
The motion stated that if the board decides to proceed with closing both elementary schools and building a new elementary school in front of Cisne Middle School — with a maximum square footage and cap on construction costs — the board would adopt a resolution in time for the proposal to appear on the April 6, 2027 ballot for district taxpayers.
The motion failed on a 4-2 vote, with four members voting no and two voting yes.
Prior to the regular meeting at Cisne Middle School, the board held a budget hearing and approved the district’s fiscal year 2027 budget.
During the regular meeting, the board approved the fiscal year 2026 audit as presented by Kemper CPA Group and authorized Superintendent Ellis to apply for the FY27 School Maintenance Project Grant. The board also approved purchasing new automated external defibrillators, or AEDs, as needed.
Board members approved the district’s 2025-26 Administrator and Teacher Salary and Benefits Report and payment of the September bills.
As part of the consent agenda, the board accepted the resignation of Sonia Allen as Cisne Middle School cafeteria assistant. Personal leave and dock day requests were also approved, along with minutes from the August 19 regular meeting and September 9 special meeting.
The board later entered executive session before returning to open session. The meeting adjourned at 9:34 p.m.
