Fairfield Rural firefighters battled a large field fire north of Merriam Wednesday afternoon that eventually burned more than 20 acres.
Fairfield Rural Assistant Fire Chief Chris Miller said the fire started when the exhaust system of a UTV ignited corn stubble. Strong southerly winds caused the flames to spread rapidly.
The fire initially covered about five acres but eventually grew to 20 acres or more and spread into nearby woods.
Fairfield Rural utilized four brush trucks to fight the blaze, while the Fairfield City Fire Department provided an additional brush truck for mutual aid.
No buildings or vehicles were damaged, and no injuries were reported.
