FCHS ALUMNI INVITED TO SCHOOL TOUR, GROUP PHOTO AS CORE BUILDING CELEBRATES 100 YEARS

Fairfield Community High School alumni are being invited back to campus Saturday for a special school tour and group photograph as FCHS celebrates the 100th anniversary of its core building.

The FCHS Alumni Association will host the school tour beginning at 11 a.m., giving former students an opportunity to revisit the building and see the changes and improvements that have taken place over the years.

Following the tour, alumni will gather for a group photograph at noon on the front steps of FCHS. Alumni do not have to participate in the tour to be included in the photograph. Those who purchased an FCHS Alumni T-shirt are encouraged to wear it for the picture.

The event comes during a milestone year for FCHS. The core section of the current high school building was completed on August 26, 1926, making it 100 years old during the 2026-27 school year.

A Wayne County Press account from 1926 described the then-new school as having three stories and a basement. The building was opened to the public for tours before students began classes.

The history of the property goes back even further. Hayward College stood on the site from 1885 until it was destroyed by fire in 1898. Fairfield Community High School itself was originally established on the grounds where Center Street School is now located.

FCHS history also includes the story behind the school’s Mules nickname. The school’s teams were previously known as the “Barefoot Boys” before an Olney sportswriter reportedly described Fairfield’s players as being as stubborn as a bunch of  “mules”.

FCHS is celebrating the building’s centennial throughout the school year with events and activities for students, alumni and the community. Saturday’s tour and group photo will give former students an opportunity to reconnect with classmates while helping commemorate a century of history at the current high school building.
