A mental fitness evaluation has been ordered for a Fairfield man awaiting trial on charges stemming from the August shooting of his girlfriend.
Wayne County Public Defender Heidi Hoffee told the court she has genuine doubts about the fitness of 43-year-old Rawleigh Bailey. During a hearing last week, the court appointed Dr. Steven Gaskell to conduct an evaluation in preparation for a possible not guilty by reason of insanity defense.
Bailey is charged with attempted murder with intent to kill, a Class X felony; domestic battery with bodily harm by a person with four prior felony convictions, a Class 2 felony; and reckless discharge of a firearm, a Class 4 felony.
Authorities allege Bailey shot his girlfriend, identified as Becky Bennett, multiple times during an incident at his rural Fairfield home late August 29th or early August 30th. Bennett was taken to an Evansville hospital for treatment and was later released.
Bailey has been denied pretrial release and remains in the Wayne County Jail.
A status hearing concerning his mental fitness has been scheduled for November 5th.
