The 2026 Illinois fall trout fishing season will open Saturday, October 17th at 60 ponds, lakes and streams across the state.
Locally, anglers will be able to fish for trout at Turkey Run Pond at Sam Dale Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area in Wayne County, Boston Pond at Stephen A. Forbes State Recreation Area in Marion County, and the Mt. Vernon City Park Pond in Jefferson County.
An early catch-and-release season opens at select locations Saturday. Trout cannot be kept during that period. The regular season begins at 5 a.m. October 17th, although opening times may vary by location.
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources stocks more than 80,000 rainbow trout for the fall season, with another 80,000 stocked for the spring season.
Once the regular season opens, anglers are limited to five trout per day. A valid Illinois fishing license and inland trout stamp are required.
Anglers are encouraged to check regulations and opening times for their preferred location before heading out. For more information on trout seasons and other Illinois fishing opportunities, visit www.ifishillinois.org.
