HIGH SCHOOL GOLF:
The Fairfield Mules and Lady Mules had a pair of golfers compete in the IHSA Sectionals on Monday. At Monticello, River Wise shot an 85 to finish 51st out of 112 golfers.

At Roxana, Lady Mule Amelia Hopfinger shot a 102 to finish 88th out of 112 golfers.

HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS:
The Lady Mules Tennis team faced off with Mt. Carmel at the Lakeside Tennis Courts on Monday and earned a 6-3 victory. The Lady Mules picked up Singles wins from Wren Braddock, Kenry Hutchcraft, Carly Fleener, and Ella Gonzalez; and Doubles victories from the team of Emily Vaughan and Malori Simpson and the team of Carly Fleener and Ella Gonzalez.

The Wayne City Braves Cross Country team competed at Norris City Monday and had several runners earn Medalist honors. They were: Rigger Legg-1st and Kash Newton-25th in Varsity Boys; Presley Kelly-13th, Elsie Talbert-16th, and Ruby Manning-20th in Varsity Girls; Leo Talbert-11th in JV Boys; and Kallie Newton-11th and Lennon Williams-13th in JV Girls.

(Chicago, IL) — The Blackhawks return to the ice tonight. The team faces off against Alex Vlasic and the Blues at home. Chicago is 0-and-3 on the young season while St. Louis is 1-and-1.

(Undated) — The NFL has suspended a pair of officials for conduct toward players. Line judge Jeff Seeman and referee Adrian Hill have both been punished for their recent incidents. Seeman has been suspended two games for yelling a profanity at Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride. Hill was hit with a one-game suspension after pointing and yelling at Minnesota Vikings linebacker Eric Wilson for accidentally colliding with him.

(Washington, D.C.) — The Commanders’ quarterback situation is getting concerning. Head coach Dan Quinn told the media on Monday that Marcus Mariota is dealing with a sprained MCL and there’s currently no timetable for his return. However, Jayden Daniels is expected to fully participate in practice this week ahead of Washington’s game against the Giants on Sunday.

(Cincinnati, OH) — The Bengals are dealing with banged up receivers. Head coach Zac Taylor said Monday that wideout Tee Higgins is day to day with an adductor issue he suffered during Cincinnati’s recent loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Higgins will have a rehab and preparation plan in place when the team practices for the first time on Wednesday. Meanwhile, fellow receiver Ja’Marr Chase is in concussion protocol.

(Green Bay, WI) — The Packers’ defense has been dealt a significant blow. Head coach Matt LaFleur confirmed Monday that linebacker Edgerrin Cooper suffered a season-ending Achilles tear during Green Bay’s recent win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Cooper went down without contact and reached for his lower left leg midway through the third quarter. He was ruled out shortly after being carted off the field.

Towns said Monday that it doesn’t look like he’ll be getting a new contract in place before the start of the regular season. The 30-year-old is eligible for a four-year deal worth over 276-million-dollars, but according to ESPN the Knicks latest offer was a four-year deal worth about 200-million-dollars. Owner James Dolan has stated the team will not go into the second spending apron.

(Washington, DC) — Alex Ovechkin plans to retire at the end of this NHL season. The league’s all-time leading goal scorer announced the news on social media Monday. He said he and his family reached the decision over the summer and he wanted to let fans know ahead of the Washington Capitals’ home opener. Ovechkin said he loves hockey “so much,” but knows retirement is the right decision. The 41-year-old was drafted out of Russia by the Capitals with the first overall pick in 2004 and led the team to their first Stanley Cup in 2018.

>>Two Illinois Players Named To Preseason All-Big Ten Team

(Champaign, IL) — Two Illinois basketball players are being recognized ahead of the upcoming season. Sophomore forward David Mirkovic and senior guard Andrej Stojakovic were selected to the Preseason All-Big Ten team. Mirkovic ranked third on the Illini in scoring and second in both rebounding and assists last season. Stojakovic was the team’s second-leading scorer in his first season as an Illini. Both helped Illinois reach the Final Four.
