Carmi Mayor Bill Stendeback resigned from office Monday morning. A specially called Carmi City Council meeting is scheduled for today (Wednesday) when council members are expected to select an interim mayor.
The person chosen will serve until the April 2027 municipal election, with the winner of that election serving the remaining two years of the mayoral term.
Stendeback was elected mayor in the spring of 2025. He ultimately ran unopposed after then-Mayor Jeff Pollard withdrew from the race in December 2024.
Before entering the mayor’s office, Stendeback was the longtime owner of Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Carmi. He opened the business in 1999 and retired in 2021, when he sold the funeral home to Jordan Funeral Group.
No reason for Stendeback’s resignation was provided in the information released by city officials.
