WABASH AREA DEVELOPMENT ANNOUNCES ENERGY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM FOR 2026-27

By Mark Wells Oct 7, 2026 | 11:55 AM

Wabash Area Development, Inc. has announced that funding is available through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) to help qualifying households with natural gas, propane and electric bills, along with furnace assistance for inoperable heating systems.

WADI administers the program in Edwards, Gallatin, Hamilton, Saline, Wabash, Wayne and White counties.

Applications opened October 1st for adults age 60 and older, individuals with disabilities, families with children age 5 and younger, and households that have been disconnected, received a disconnection notice or have less than 25 percent remaining in their propane tank. All other income-eligible households may begin applying November 1st.
Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis through August 13, 2027, or until available funding is exhausted.

Income eligibility varies depending on the household’s utility provider. For customers of federally funded utilities or energy vendors, monthly income limits are $3,441 for a one-person household, $4,500 for two people, $5,558 for three and $6,617 for four. Different guidelines apply to qualifying customers of Ameren Illinois, ComEd, Nicor Gas, North Shore Gas and Peoples Gas.

LIHEAP provides one-time benefits to eligible homeowners and renters to assist with energy costs and reconnection of service. Households receiving an initial benefit may also be eligible to return during the program year for reconnection or furnace assistance if needed.

WADI encourages eligible propane customers to apply early, noting that propane prices typically increase during the winter.

Applicants will need documentation including proof of household income for the previous 30 days, Social Security number documentation for new applicants or new household members when applicable, and current heating and electric bills. Additional documentation may be required depending on individual circumstances.

Applications will be accepted through local WADI offices. For information on application requirements, outreach locations and schedules, call Wabash Area Development at 618-963-2387.
