HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL:
The Fairfield Lady Mules varsity volleyball team continued its winning ways Thursday night, sweeping the Hamilton County Lady Foxes in a Black Diamond Conference matchup at McLeansboro.
The freshman matchup ended in a split, with Fairfield taking the opening set 25-15 before Hamilton County battled back to win the second set 29-27.
In JV action, Fairfield recorded a two-set sweep, defeating Hamilton County 25-22 and 25-10.
Fairfield claimed the varsity match in straight sets, winning 25-10 and 25-15. With the victory, the Lady Mules improved to 24-5 overall and remained undefeated in Black Diamond Conference play with a 7-0 record.
The Lady Mules will return to action Monday night when they travel to Albion to face the Edwards County Lady Lions in another Black Diamond Conference matchup. Monday’s contests will also serve as the annual Pink Out game.
All three levels will compete, with the freshman match beginning at 5 p.m., followed by junior varsity and varsity action.

HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY:
The Mules and Lady Mules Cross Country teams were in action at the Cumberland Invite at Lakeland College on Thursday, and both teams came away with 4th Place finishes. Individual medalists for the Mules Boys were Ashton King-11th, Skylar Bladel-19th, Treyton Lewis-23rd, Kendall Diesel-31st, Kanyen Lingafelter-37th, and Jarret Vaughan-52nd. Individual medalists for the Lady Mules were Emeri Sager-4th, Ellanie Vanway-24th, Brianna Meeks-25th, Gabby Zurliene-28th, Nela Segitova-36th, and Addy Spencer-49th.

The Sharks edged the Blues 3-2 in overtime from St. Louis. Darnell Nurse netted the game-winner about a minute into the extra period. Tyler Toffoli and Collin Graf lit the lamp in regulation as San Jose is now 3-and-1 on the young season. Connor McMichael and Dillon Dube scored goals for St. Louis, which slipped to 1-2-and-1.

The Islanders put together a complete performance to silence the Blackhawks 4-1 from Elmont. Bo Horvat netted a pair of goals, including an empty-netter to seal the win. Ilya Sorokin made 22-of-23 saves between the pipes as New York improved to 2-and-2 on the young season. Frank Nazar scored the lone goal for Chicago, which slipped to 1-and-4.

(New York, NY) — Major League Baseball is proposing major changes to its regular season and playoff format beginning in 2029. Several proposals were presented Thursday during collective bargaining negotiations with the MLB Players Association, including reducing the regular season from 162 to 154 games. Another proposal would expand the Division Series from a best-of-five to a best-of-seven format. MLB also wants higher-seeded teams to choose their opponents in the Wild Card and Division Series rounds. The league says the changes would improve player health and create more national television opportunities. The players’ union remains opposed to MLB’s proposed salary cap, which the league has tied to the changes.
