Carmi’s new skate park is nearing completion, with the final concrete pad scheduled to be poured today (Monday) at Bradshaw Park. The project, known as Bulldog Skate Park, has been spearheaded by local skateboard enthusiasts who wanted to provide a dedicated place for residents, especially younger skaters, to enjoy the sport.
Local skateboarder Jacob Burnett said the idea began after he posted a video on Facebook showing himself skating on a piece of concrete in town. The response from residents convinced him there was strong support for a skate park. Burnett, along with Michael Willis, Jarred Armstrong and others, began working with city officials, including former Mayor Bill Stendeback, to develop the project using equipment from the former Huntington Skate Park. The group raised approximately $11,000 from local businesses to help pay for the concrete and has also raised money for a sponsorship sign.
Construction began September 14th, and the project is now approaching its final stages. Burnett said the ramps and obstacles have already been rebuilt and are awaiting installation and painting once the concrete work is completed.
The equipment features heavy-duty welded metal construction, with much of the original skate park’s structure being reused and reinforced.
While construction continues, local skaters have been gathering at Bradshaw Park, bringing portable ramps, rails and extra skateboards for anyone interested in participating. Burnett said providing equipment for beginners is especially important because skateboarding can be expensive for young people just getting started.
He also said the opportunity to teach younger skaters and watch them develop their skills has been one of the most rewarding parts of the project.
Organizers say the skate park is intended to be a welcoming place for skaters of all ages and experience levels.
An official opening date has not yet been announced.
