U.S. Representative Mike Bost has announced a $12.6 million federal grant to improve truck parking availability and safety along Interstate 57 in Effingham and Marion counties.
The funding, provided through the U.S. Department of Transportation, will support reconstruction and expansion of the Green Creek Southbound and Post Oak Southbound rest areas.
The project includes construction of new facilities, utility and drainage improvements, and the addition of approximately 38 truck parking spaces.
Improvements will also include a Truck Parking Information Management System featuring automated vehicle detection, electronic kiosks and security equipment to help truck drivers locate available parking.
Bost, who grew up in the trucking business, said providing safe and reliable parking areas for commercial drivers has been one of his priorities.
The congressman previously sent a letter to U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy supporting the project and emphasizing the need for additional truck parking along the interstate.
Bost said the improvements will help address parking shortages while improving highway safety and supporting the movement of agricultural products, manufactured goods and other freight throughout Southern Illinois.
