Motorists traveling eastbound on Interstate 64 near Mount Vernon will need to plan for an overnight closure later this month as crews conduct maintenance work.
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has announced that eastbound I-64 will be closed at U.S. Route 51 beginning at 10 p.m. Thursday, October 22nd. The interstate is expected to reopen by 6 a.m. Friday, October 23rd, weather permitting.
During the closure, eastbound motorists will be directed south on U.S. 51 to Illinois Route 15, then east to the Interstate 57/64 interchange in Mount Vernon.
In addition to the I-64 closure, the southbound driving lane of Interstate 57 will be closed just south of the I-57/I-64 merge during the same overnight period.
IDOT advises drivers to expect delays, allow additional travel time and use caution when traveling through the affected area.
Motorists are also reminded to slow down, obey posted construction signs and avoid distractions while traveling through work zones.
All work is weather-dependent, and the schedule could change if conditions are unfavorable.
