The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has confirmed that a large cat spotted multiple times in Union and Jackson counties during August and September was a mountain lion.
State wildlife officials believe the sightings involved the same animal.
The confirmation marks the 12th verified mountain lion in Illinois since 2002 and the first confirmed sighting since a mountain lion was documented in Pike County in 2025.
Mountain lions, also known as cougars or pumas, typically have tan or tawny-colored coats with white or cream-colored chins, undersides and inner legs. They also have rounded ears that are black or dark gray on the back.
IDNR officials are reminding residents to use caution if they encounter a mountain lion.
The department advises people not to run or approach the animal. Instead, individuals should make noise to ensure the mountain lion is aware of their presence and give it plenty of space.
Mountain lions have been protected under Illinois law since 2015. Hunting, killing or harassing a mountain lion is prohibited unless the animal poses an imminent threat to people or property.
Anyone who spots a mountain lion or has concerns about a potential threat is encouraged to contact the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
