The Crossville Village Board has approved a proposal from Aveo Energy Solar to install a solar energy system at the village’s sewer plant. The project carries an initial cost of $55,500, but incentives and rebates are expected to reduce the expense to approximately $43,381. The system is projected to pay for itself in about four years and includes a 25-year warranty.
Board members discussed the system’s battery backup capabilities and compared the investment to purchasing a new generator. Concerns were also raised about how effectively the solar system would operate during the winter months. The proposal was approved, with board members Jacobs and Kuykendall voting against it.
In other business, the board discussed establishing a village ordinance regulating when residents may place trash containers along the street and when they must be removed following collection.
Members discussed possible time restrictions and the need to account for holiday collection schedules. The board agreed to have an ordinance drafted for future consideration.
Utility Superintendent Derek Spicer also recommended upgrading the water tower’s emergency notification system.
The current system operates through a telephone line, while the proposed Sensaphone Sentinel would use an internet connection to alert village personnel to low water levels and other problems.
The board approved purchasing the new monitoring equipment for $678, along with an installation fee and a one-year subscription. The combined expense was estimated at $786, not including the cost of establishing internet service at the water tower.
The board also reviewed a proposal to replace the village’s entrance signs. Two powder-coated steel signs were priced at $13,500, not including installation.
Members decided to table the proposal while Spicer investigates additional pricing options.
A proposed complaint policy resolution was also tabled until all board members could be present for a vote.
The board authorized accepting bids for village-owned property on Second Street behind the bank, along with bids for the village’s former ambulance. Ambulance bids are expected to be opened during the November meeting.
Members also approved a resolution establishing the route for the December 12 Winterfest parade. A highway closure permit must still be submitted to the state.
In park-related business, the board agreed to obtain an additional portable restroom that will be handicap-accessible. The facility will be available during the winter months when the regular restrooms at Village Park are closed.
The board also selected Cherie Westfall to serve as an alternate on several village committees, including those overseeing animal-related matters, police and fire services.
