Officials at Veterans Airport of Southern Illinois in Marion celebrated the launch of American Airlines’ nonstop service to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport Thursday morning.
The celebration, held October 15th recognized the individuals and organizations involved in bringing the new air service to Southern Illinois.
American Airlines began operating the nonstop flights in early September, providing travelers with a direct connection between Marion and Chicago.
The service features a 65-seat jet aircraft, with 12 round-trip flights scheduled each week.
Thursday’s ceremony took place as airport crews prepared an American Airlines flight for departure to Chicago.
American Airlines was awarded the air service contract in May. The agreement covers a two-year period beginning August 1, 2026, and continuing through July 31, 2028.
Airport officials say the new service provides an additional travel option for Southern Illinois residents and businesses, with connections to other destinations available through Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.
