Illinois’ unemployment rate declined slightly in September, although the state experienced a decrease in payroll jobs, according to the latest figures released by the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

The state’s unemployment rate fell to 4.6 percent in September, down from 4.7 percent in August. However, the rate remained one-tenth of a percentage point higher than September of last year.

Despite the improvement in unemployment, Illinois lost 7,200 nonfarm payroll jobs during September, bringing total employment to approximately 6.16 million.

The largest monthly job gains were recorded in leisure and hospitality, which added 5,700 positions, followed by construction with 1,300 additional jobs.

Meanwhile, government employment declined by 4,600 jobs, private education and health services lost 3,700 positions, and professional and business services declined by 2,400.

Compared to September 2025, Illinois had 13,800 more payroll jobs, representing an increase of two-tenths of one percent.

Construction led the yearly gains with 14,300 additional jobs, while financial activities experienced the largest decline, losing 13,500 positions.

The number of unemployed Illinois residents fell to approximately 297,700 in September, a three-percent decrease from August.

State officials say the unemployment rate has now declined for three consecutive months.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security continues to connect job seekers with employers through job fairs, hiring events and its Illinois JobLink employment website.

Recent figures showed more than 75,500 available jobs listed through Illinois JobLink, along with nearly 61,000 posted resumes.
