Groff Memorial Public Library in Grayville will host authors and historians Ed and Diane Annable on Thursday, November 12th for a special presentation examining conflicts between Native Americans and European settlers in Southern Illinois.
The program, titled Indian “Massacres” in Southern Illinois, will begin at 6 p.m. at the library, located at 118 South Middle Street in Grayville.
The Annables will discuss their newest book, Indian Massacres in Southern Illinois: The Fight Against the Invaders, which explores historical accounts of deadly encounters between Native American populations and settlers throughout the southern counties of Illinois.
The book examines how competition for land and resources, along with political tensions and British involvement, contributed to violent conflicts as European settlers moved into the region.
According to the authors, many of these events have been preserved through local stories passed down through generations. Their research places those encounters into the broader historical context of Native American resistance to settlement and the struggle for control of the region.
The presentation will offer attendees an opportunity to learn more about the history of Southern Illinois and the events that shaped the area’s early development.
