Gold Star Mission is now accepting applications for its 2027 Scholarship Program, offering financial assistance to Illinois students while honoring the memory of military service members who made the ultimate sacrifice.
The application period opened Sunday and will continue through February 1, 2027. Scholarship recipients will be recognized in March.
Since establishing the program in 2017, Gold Star Mission has awarded more than $350,000 in educational scholarships, with each award presented in honor and remembrance of a fallen Illinois military hero.
Gold Star Mission President Barry Tobias said the scholarship program serves as a way to preserve the legacies of fallen service members while investing in future generations.
“Each scholarship we award carries the name and memory of a fallen Illinois service member,” Tobias said. “It’s our way of ensuring their sacrifice continues to inspire selfless service and leadership in others.”
The scholarships are available to students with an Illinois connection who are pursuing or planning to pursue higher education. Eligible applicants include graduating high school seniors, community college and university students, individuals attending vocational or technical schools, and adults returning to school or pursuing new career opportunities.
Applicants do not need to have a military affiliation to qualify but should demonstrate a commitment to education, leadership, and community service.
Each scholarship is worth $1,000 and may be used toward tuition, textbooks, school fees, on-campus room and board, approved tutoring, and other qualifying educational expenses.
Founded by Illinois National Guard members in 2017, Gold Star Mission works to honor and preserve the memories of more than 300 Illinois military service members killed since September 11, 2001.
The organization also supports Gold Star families through remembrance initiatives, educational programs, and endurance events.
Applications for the 2027 scholarship program must be completed online by February 1, 2027.
