The Fairfield City Council met for their regular monthly meeting last (Tuesday) night at City Hall. The council approved the minutes from the previous meeting and the bills submitted since the last meeting. Kristie Blackman, owner of Sunrise Sanitation appeared before the council and presented a proposal for renewing their waste collection contract with the city. The proposed changes included removing language about park containers they no longer service, including a previously excluded dumpster, removing the limit on bags left outside, and increasing residential rates to $23.80 per month starting March 1, 2025, with a 4% annual increase thereafter. The council did not take action on the proposal during the meeting and will seek bids.
The council reviewed and approved bids for purchasing various chemicals needed for the city’s water treatment plant, as recommended by the water treatment staff.
The council approved paying the full annual premium of $214,309.07 for the city’s risk management insurance policy by November 15th, as recommended by staff, to avoid a higher cost for installment payments.
Mayor Gary Moore addressed the council on a proposal from a developer from St. Louis to build a new 70-room, 4-story Comfort Inn & Suites hotel in the city, which would represent a $10 million investment. The developer requested the city donate up to 4 acres of land for the project. Mayor Moore says the city owns a little over 8 acres just east of Williamson Drive and east of Chava’s Cantina Mexican Restaurant and directly across from Dollar Tree. Mayor Moore says he and City Attorney, Darrin Rice will work with the developer to donate up to four acres of the property for construction of the new hotel and the possibility of adding a restaurant outside the hotel. Moore says the developer has already toured the property infrastructure. The council authorized Mayor Moore and City Attorney Rice to negotiate the land donation, with the condition that the land would revert back to the city if the hotel project does not proceed. Moore says for several years the city has been trying to entice a new hotel into the city, but the COVID pandemic held up progress but the city didn’t give up and continued to where we are today.
The Mayor announced details for upcoming events, including trick-or-treat hours which will be Wednesday, October 30th and Thursday, October 31st from 5pm to 8pm. Also a downtown Halloween event with retailers staying open late with food vendors set up in the downtown area, the annual Fire Departments chili supper, and plans to install new Christmas lights downtown after Thanksgiving.
