Media reports say the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate a multi-state criminal enterprise responsible for the theft of hundreds of vehicles dating back to 2019.
According to the sheriff’s office, late Thursday night a Spillertown Police officer attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation, with the vehicle fleeing from police. A chase continued northbound on I-57 reaching speeds over 120 mph before the vehicle ran out of gas near West Frankfort. The driver, Armon V. Cameron, was taken into custody without further incident. Along with traffic charges, he was taken into custody on an outstanding Cook County warrant for vehicle theft.
Williamson County Sheriff’s Office investigators were able to locate the registered owner of the vehicle, a 17 year old resident from Marion, IL and discovered that Cameron had just bought the vehicle minutes earlier. A review of the transaction determined the $26,000 payment method through a bank check was fraudulent. During an investigation, it was discovered that the St. Louis-based criminal enterprise had been fraudulently acquiring as many as ten vehicles a week across a three-state area. Cameron was eventually lodged in the Williamson County Jail.
