The Fairfield City Council met for their regular monthly meeting last (Tuesday) night at City Hall. A public hearing was held prior to the regular council meeting with Doug Skaggs, a spokesman for the Zoning Board appearing before the council to explain a request to rezone 1203 Florence Drive from R1 (single-family home) to R2 (one and two-family homes). The property owner, Colin Dunn plans to convert the existing house into a duplex by splitting the house in half, add a kitchenette to what was formerly a garage section and make a separate housing unit in that side of it. The Council approved the request for the rezone. The council approved the minutes of the October 22nd meeting and the submitted bills for payment after review.
Two bids were presented for the demolition of property located at 303 Northeast 7th Street. Guisewite Excavating and Recycling from Mt. Carmel bid $7,800 with additional costs for fill dirt and seeding. John Ray’s Mowing and Backhoe Service of Fairfield bid $11,310.88 for a complete job including fill and seeding. After some discussion, the council approved John Ray’s bid.
The council discussed seeking bids for a new five-year trash contract starting March 1st, 2025. They outlined specific requirements including weekly pickup, provision of totes, and service for city facilities and events. Currently, the city is under contract with Sunrise Sanitation. The council approved seeking bids to be submitted by the first meeting in December. The council approved Christmas bonuses for city employees, maintaining the same structure as previous years. Full-time employees will receive $200 base plus $5 for each year of service, while part-time employees will receive $150. That will make the total payables for the Christmas bonuses to city employees, excluding the Mayor in the amount of $19,940. The council decided to cancel the December 24th council meeting due to it falling on Christmas Eve. They instructed the city treasurer to pay all invoices that are due.
Mayor Gary Moore praised the success of the Halloween event on Main Street. The Mayor indicated the financial report showed positive income for October and year-to-date, with a general fund balance of $1,525,114 at the end of October.
