WAYNE COUNTY STATE’S ATTORNEY, KEVIN KAKAC LEAVING OFFICE AT THE END OF NOVEMBER

Wayne County State’s Attorney Kevin Kakac has announced that he will step aside at the end of his current term, which expires on November 30th.   Although re-elected unopposed on November 5th, Kakac, a Republican, has decided not to assume office for the next term, citing his desire to pass the torch to the next generation of leaders.

“When I chose to seek the nomination last spring, there was no Assistant State’s Attorney in the office, and the path forward for new leadership remained uncertain,” Kakac explained. “Had an excellent candidate been in place at filing time last year, my decision would have been different.”

Shortly after the 2024 Spring Primary, Kakac hired Kyle Ellis, a local attorney, as Assistant State’s Attorney. Over the past year, Ellis has gained Kakac’s full confidence. “Kyle has shown himself to be an excellent public servant and an ideal replacement,” Kakac said. “He exhibits the skills, maturity, and responsibility necessary to succeed as the elected State’s Attorney and has already been performing the duties of the role thoughtfully and effectively.”

Reflecting on his tenure, Kakac described his time as State’s Attorney as both an honor and a privilege. “I’ve always taken the responsibilities of this office seriously, even if I didn’t always take myself too seriously,” he noted, expressing gratitude to the people of Wayne County for their trust and support.

Looking ahead, Kakac plans to continue working full-time in the legal field and is eager to explore new opportunities. His final day as State’s Attorney will be November 30th.   The Wayne County Board is expected to select his successor in December, with Kakac recommending Kyle Ellis for the position.

“I’m confident the office will be in good hands with Assistant State’s Attorney Kyle Ellis,” Kakac stated, adding that he is leaving the role and the office in a strong position.
